Letter Writing Semi-formal Letter (Updated)

A semi-formal letter is a letter that is written to a known person whom we do not share personal relationships with. It is for non-formal relationships requiring a respectful approach. Typical examples of semi-formal letters are letters parents send to the school principal, a teacher or lecturer, or a pastor and a letter to a known person.

 

Hence, a semi-formal letter is between a formal and an informal letter, which is why it is called semi-formal. Its content is usually a private or family issue.

 

FEATURES OF A SEMI-FORMAL LETTER.

1. The writer’s address followed by the date is to be written on the right-hand side.

 

2. Salutation- Dear Sir/Ma is perfect if you do not know the name of the recipient. If you know the name of the receiver; if their name is Esther; Dear Mrs Esther should be written.

 

3. Introduction– The introduction should not be formal and it should also not be informal. You can draw attention to a time you both spent together or were together.

 

  1. Body- The body of your letter should be in no less than four paragraphs. Each paragraph should convey an idea. No more than one idea per paragraph. Exclamation marks and contractions can be used. Your paragraphs are to be indebted.
  1. Closing- The following are appropriate closings for a semi-formal letter; Respectfully yours, Yours very truly, Yours truly, Sincerely yours, Sincerely, Yours sincerely, Cordially, Best regards, Warmest regards, Best wishes and Best.
  1. Signature and name. Do not write your full name, except that is what the person calls you.
