A computer performs various operations or functions but can also be classified into five major operations irrespective of its size and make. These are;

• It accepts data or instructions as input,
• It stores data and instruction
• It processes data as per the instructions,
• It controls all operations `within a computer system or a laptop, and
• It gives results which are usually in the form of output.

A computer system can be divided into four basic units; namely

• input unit
• storage unit
• central processing unit
• Output unit.

Central Processing unit further includes;

• Arithmetic logic unit
• Control unit.

The characteristics of computers that have created them thus powerful and universally useful are speed, accuracy, diligence, versatility and storage capacity.

Speed: Computers work at an incredible speed. A powerful computer system which include laptop is capable of performing about 3-4 million simple instructions per second.

Versatility: Computers are versatile machines and are capable of performing any task as long because it will be attenuated into a series of logical steps. The presence of computers can be seen in virtually every operations and sphere – manufacturing, Railway/Air reservation, Banks, Hotels, Weather forecasting and many more.

Storage Capacity: Modern computers can store large volumes of data usually in gigs and bite. A piece of information once recorded (or stored) in the computer system including a laptop, `and there can never be a scenario where the computer systems fail to recall and can be always retrieved every details stored in it almost instantaneously

A computer is a programmable machine or system designed to perform arithmetic and logical operations automatically and consecutive on the input is given by the user and provides the required output gives the desired output after processing.

Computer components are divided into 2 major classes specifically hardware and software.

Hardware can be defined as the machine itself and its connected devices like monitor, keyboard, mouse etc.

Software can be defined as the set of programs using hardware for performing various functions.
